*SPOILER ALERT: read at your own risk*
I'm a little late in the game on this one, but I just bit the bullet and dragged myself unwillingly to watch Happy Feet.
I was prepared to be surprised. Prepared to like it...and I was also prepared to hate it.
Happy Feet, like all modern penguin-esque filmotography has been stigmatized by the religious sect as "pro-gay". Personally I dislike the idea of shoving ANY propaganda down childrens throats, regardless of the subject matter.
After having watched this movie, I can tell you that this stigmatization is *drumroll please* A LIE!
--Ah, but before you go find a forum to bash religious nuts on, stick around a while and let me finish.
I must confess, some 'pro-gay' aspects could be construed from it if you're already looking for it, but its so vague and so brief that no children will pick up on it (especially considering that there are no gay penguins in this film and the protagonist is after a girl himself).
But here is where the religious people have right to be offended... While not pro-homosexual, this movie IS blatantly and unapologetically anti-theist; as all the penguins eventually accept a belief in aliens (yes, they use the term "aliens", though this is in reference to humans) and become exceedingly happier when every last one of them renounces their faith in their god.
Throughout the movie the characters blatantly portrayed as "the bad guys" can be heard spouting penguinized quotes from the Christian and Jewish bible, only to be shot down as 'ridiculous' by the protagonist, as he sets out to prove the existence of 'aliens' and to fix their lives without the aid of their god.
Beyond this, the movie could also be said to be anti-human, as they are portrayed as heartless and indifferent people, often referred to by the birds as 'ugly', 'fat', and 'flabby'.
After being rescued from a beach far far from his home, the protagonist is put in a zoo, where this is translated as torture to the animal that otherwise would have died without the human aid. The 'heartless' humans only begin to show any sign of a heart when the penguins decide to make themselves extra special by dancing.
Were it not for the blatant pushing of anti-theist, and anti-human propaganda to impressionable children, this movie could have been cute. With great animation and cute fluffy penguins; and the ever so silly Robin Williams all making for a very charming film (though some of the singing can become a bit obnoxious). But as it stands I do not recommend this movie to anyone who doesn't want the media pushing this sort of thing on their children.
